With an executive order, Obama will close the base in Guantanamo, Cuba where over 200 enemy combatants are being held. And NPR, our source for all the best debate, recently produced a show asking the question of people in Leavenworth, KS and a Republican congressman - why not and why are you opposed to this? The reason: we are scared! Of course we are scared, but that's war, right? Seems funny to me that we won't even sacrifice on this level either. Also seems to me that we are in this situation because there hasn't been a culture of "asking for sacrifice". Obama is clearly changing this...
What are your views? Would you want a terrorist held in your backyard maximum security prison? Did you know we are holding terrorists in those prisons now...???

Should we call this Blog 1, or what about The First Blog. I was also thinking The Blog OF The Hill, or better yet ObamaBlog. I'm kidding, I think; this is a great idea for Obama. Think about it this way. Do both companies sell exactly the same thing and produce/market it in the same way? Of course not; doesn't seem logical and if that were the case then I'm sure there would be lawsuits. What software companies produce is process and service. To state more clearly, the way you use (process) the software in your daily life or business is the service. It is the competitive advantage. Thus, the advantage doesn't come from just having the software but instead, how you use it.
The picture above kind of illustrates my point. Is it a face or a vase? Surely most of us know the optical illusion going on here, but the point I'm trying to make with this picture is how you "process" the image; what you are focusing on (service).

Basically, it is a one big plateau. To be particular it is the Colorado Plateau. The Plateau includes a small part of western Colorado and northwestern New Mexico, much of northern Arizona and a substantial part of Utah. In this area, we have it all: good people, killer BC skiing, amazing mountain biking, excellent food, no crowds, undiscovered country, committed progressives, and an anything goes attitude. Do other places have these things, yes; but I love these things where I live!
Now, this blog isn't just about where I live, but where you live. Are you as excited about your area? You should be! I'm only writing about where I live, because that's where I am now. In Oklahoma, I loved it there too (not as much as here, but I did something about that didn't I?). In Oklahoma, I drove all over to find the best rocks and trails. I can tell you where to climb, ride and run; just like I can here. My point is you should love where you live and find your passion there. If you can't find it there, then MOVE! You can always make money, it is all about your passion...

Yep, ChainRingAction just broke 6000 absolute unique visitors (the picture is from the lower portion of my blog). To some blogs this isn't much, but I'm happy about it. What's more, 6000 is an important number. I'm taking it very seriously, and so should you. A few facts about "6000"...
1. It is the natural number following 5999 and before 6001
2. The gene IL1RN has a this as an HGNC of 6000 - whatever that means...
3. The Epson EMP-6000 printer has been noted to save you "time and money" - wow
4. In the stock market world, if a market breaks the 6000 mark, that's a big deal - China's did in 2007!

Developed by Fred Reichheld, Author of The Ultimate Question, the idea is that how likely a customer would recommend you to a friend or peer is all that really matters. Sure, other customer surveys are important, but at the end of the day, a lot of recommendations will drive your success - economic success. Why? Well think about it. If you go back to the McKinnsey quote, then you need to look no further. Would you really buy something without the consult of a friend who had already purchased that "thing"? Of course not, you would be very interested. And that is the point of NPS. A company needs to find the type of person that is a promoter: someone who has had their expectations met! NPS also tries to uncover the detractors, or those that will have a negative impact. Yes, some people WON'T recommend you. With this category of user, you need to know WHY and fast.
So how do you find out what your score is? Well, according to my reading and research it is really simple: two questions. With all surveys you need to get a good response rate, so from my reading, I suggest surveying 100 people/customers. Make sure these people are a cross-section of your user base (not just the happy people). Next, the questions...
Question 1: How likely are you to recommend X to a friend (add the 1 - 10 scale)
Question 2: (ADD A FOLLOW UP QUESITON) - "can we follow up with you", "why did you rate the way you did"
To find out your score, all you have to do is calculate your company's Net Promoter Score (NPS), take the percentage of customers who are Promoters and subtract the percentage who are Detractors.
