The Interview Process: What Do You Do?

I'm shocked with McCain's choice in vice presidential candidates. Palin, are you serious? What's more, I'm on the ground from a direct blow to the brain when I consider that John McCain only met Palin TWICE. I wouldn't hire a sales rep unless I've vetted them and actually KNOW them, which means meeting more than twice. On this subject, I decided to examine my interview process and compare it with McCains.

Walker: first interview - get to know the values of the person, explain what we do

McCain: surely, something similar, but what about this: A Republican with ties to the campaign said the team assigned to vet Ms. Palin in Alaska had not arrived there until Thursday, a day before Mr. McCain stunned the political world with his vice-presidential choice. Oh, and on values: Ms. Palin now has a private lawyer in a legislative ethics investigation in Alaska into whether she abused her power in dismissing the state’s public safety commissioner.

Walker: second interview - ask about their background and why they think they would be good for the job

McCain: maybe review their job/education record:

Palin
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism with a minor in politics from the University of Idaho
  • She worked as a sports reporter for a local television station in Anchorage.
  • She also worked with her husband Todd on a commercial fishing boat.
  • Palin has served two terms on the Wasilla, Alaska City Council and also two terms as the mayor/manager of Wasilla.
  • In 2002, Palin made an unsuccessful bid for Lieutenant Governor.
  • She was then appointed the Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission
  • In 2006 she was elected Governor
Compared with Biden:
  • After earning a law degree in 1968, Biden worked as a fledgling attorney in Wilmington, Delaware for 4 years until his 1972 election to the Senate.
  • From 1970-72, Biden was a member of the New Castle County, Delaware council.
  • Six-term Sen. Joseph Biden, Jr. of Delaware was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972 when 29 years old, the youngest U.S. senator in modern history.
  • Senator Biden is one of the most respected Senate voices on foreign policy, civil liberties, crime and college aid/loan programs, and an avid supporter of AMTRAK.
And more...
  • Committee on Foreign Relations, Chair
  • Committee on the Judiciary, Chair from 1987 to 1995
  • Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Victims' rights, ranking Democratic member
  • Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control, co-chair
  • Senate NATO Observer group, co-chair
  • Senate National Security working group, co-chair
  • Congressional Firemens Caucus, co-chair
  • Congressional International Anti-Piracy caucus, co-chair
  • Congressional Air Force and National Guard caucuses
Walker: run a test to see how they do

McCain: assume they at least support what you are doing? Whoops: she was a member for two years in the 1990s of the Alaska Independence Party, which has at times sought a vote on whether the state should secede. Oh, that's American!

Walker: consider your gut and the information about the person and put on probation...

McCain: Well... At the least, Republicans close to the campaign said it was increasingly apparent that Ms. Palin had been selected as Mr. McCain’s running mate with more haste than McCain advisers initially described.

Whose style do you think works better?
