Does A Smart Watch Help Your Fitness Goals?

"This watch has truly improved my life!" Said one of my friends while bragging about his Apple Watch. He went on to describe the amount of tracking tools he uses: sleep, automatic fitness functionality, goal trackers, etc. He was elated to tell me how amazing it was to see what he was and was not doing. During a recent executive team meeting, we were asked "do you have a favorite app right now"? My answer: Samsung Health (especially after hearing my friend go on and on about his Apple Watch. And it's true! My Galaxy S3 hasn't been a game-changer from a get out and do it perspective (if you know me, then you know I don't have that problem); what the watch does for me is elevate the amount of activity I'm doing (I hope I don't fall apart soon).

Each day the S3 sends me a heart! I've set the watch to log my activity automatically, so during every run, ride, dirt bike ride (there's calorie burn in Enduro riding, trust me) and workout the watch is watching. If I meet my elevation, heart rate and calorie burn daily goals, I get a heart! The Apple Watch has a circular pattern that mirrors what the S3 does. So I want that damn heart every day! But that's not the only value I get from the S3.

When I actually track activity, which means I'm logging as particular ride or run instead of using the automatic feature, I get even more details. The heart rate monitor is active as well as GPS. If I've ridden the zone before (similar to Strava), I can see if I've crushed my former times / splits / climbs. The tracking feature is nice to have as it can also give me details on directions (if I've forgotten: left or right at this junction).

In short, my friends send me good intel on their rides and how they've murdered their previous times. I love seeing this stuff! My commentary to them: get a watch! The phone / watch combo is a no-brainer. Oh, geez, I forgot... You can receive calls, listen to music and more. The S3 has a $5 / mos data plan - BOOM!
